Pumpkins Border Pattern

Here’s a little exercise on creating a border pattern that runs the entire length of a 42″ quilting fabric. I used a pumpkin image I created last year and just modified it a bit and duplicated for the border effect. Let me know what you think!

I also have it on my Spoonflower account, so you can see a whole yard of it…

House in the Sky Pattern

Here’s another quick exercise in creating patterns. I drew a little cute house in the sky and did a half-drop repeating pattern. I think it turned out pretty cute, although I still have to work on colors. When repeated it does seem a bit too dull from all the light pastel colors. Hmm…

Thanks for stopping by and you can check out my other patterns and fabric design on Spoonflower.

La Frutta Pattern

I decided to do a quick exercise for the Spoonflower challenge of surreal fruit. I created this pattern, although I can’t say it’s exactly surreal…just fun patterns I suppose. It was definitely good practice. Let me know what you think.

You can see more of my patterns on my Spoonflower profile as well.

Heart Medallions in Italian

I liked my heart medallions pattern so much, I decided to revisit it with a bit of color and the Italian phrase “ascolterei il tuo cuore” meaning “listen to your heart.” It’s interesting to first design in black and white and slowly add bits of color. I can understand why designers work so long on a pattern that seems simple in the end…there are so many variations and details to think about. The hard part is deciding on the final design…the best design possible.

Variations on the Heart Shape

I decided to do a collection of patterns all based on the heart shape…it all started when I found a plant in the yard where the leaves resembled a heart. I was amazed and inspired…so here’s what I created.

Paisley Camouflage Pattern

I did a little design practice today with the theme of camouflage. It’s usually such a masculine kind of design, bringing up thoughts of soldiers and hunters. I decided to use the traditional color scheme but in a paisley shaped pattern. It’s supposed to be a sort of a girly camo pattern design. After staring for a while, it does start to look like amoebas crawling all over!

Spoonflower and Designing Patterns

The popularity of Spoonflower is what really got me into designing patterns. Suddenly, we all have the power to create a repeating pattern design and have it printed on fabric. Then we can make dresses or potholders or anything we can think of…how fabulous is that? I signed up for an account and you can see many of my first experimental designs in my Spoonflower profile.

Welcome!

Hi everyone! This blog has gone through several revisions and the latest was caused by loss of data. Instead of just doing a restore, I decided to start anew with my surface pattern designs. I had started a few months ago, but it went to the waysides. Now I am determined to post my surface pattern designs as often as possible. I often play around with digital designs, trying to learn more and more about designs that repeat. This blog will be a little chronicle of my adventures. Thanks for visiting!
